Statement

Every learner whose guarantee is optimality along every subsequence of decision problems fails policy-level optimality in counterlogical mugging, and a sharp impossibility theorem states this.

Source

projects/deference/faf-cleanroom-2026-10-02/sources/references/bli/notion-notes-for-soto-and-diff.md, section “Indirect” Route: "But if the optimal counterlogical mugging strategy is to hand over the money, the optimal strategy for the sub-sequence where omega asks for the money is to keep it. How are we supposed to trade off between these two subsequences?" and "But I also haven’t gotten any sharp impossibility results, which would be interesting to get."

projects/decision-theory/rounds/2026-09-29-li-bria-synthesis-spec/PROBLEM_STATEMENT.md, section 4, P1' (unit-level recovery on the full class forbids paying in per-round counterfactual mugging) and REPORT.md, section 3 (the strength proved).

Notes

Partially answered for BRIA: P1' is a sharp result on one environment family, with its hypothesis sufficient and not shown necessary. A general impossibility for the indirect route is not stated.
