Statement

Semantic legitimacy uses a correspondence notion of truth and syntactic legitimacy is a set of local rules, and legitimacy in general cashes out as local rules in the way truth-preservation does.

Source

projects/deference/note-dump-2026-08-11/related-chats/2026-07-05__theory-of-legitimacy__f57f5f2d.md, turn 5, the maintainer: "semantic legitimacy uses a classical theory of truth, based on map-territory correspondence, while syntactic legitimacy is a set of local rules. Truth-preservation is a special case. More generally, we care about whether it tracks the truth. Just as truth-preservation cashes out as local rules, we want legitimacy in general to do so (and this is a drive which humans are actually reasonably good at acting on; a major component across many human cultures)."

Notes

The maintainer's framing of Stage 3, stated as a claim; not formalized. Conditioned on the soundness task: a first formal instance of local rules sound for a semantic legitimacy notion is what would make the claim true in one case.
