legitimate-versus-legitimizing

leaf/step · drafted

Statement

A third-person event such as submitted evidence, a vote or an action is legitimizing or delegitimizing for a belief transition, and the belief the transition induces is what is legitimate or not.

Source

The author, projects/deference/corrigibility-note-dump-2026-10-01/position-statement.md, section 2.10: "The point is the vote should be called legitimizing, not legitimate, strictly speaking. Similarly, actions can be delegitimizing." The clean-room package projects/deference/faf-cleanroom-2026-10-02/packages/corr-legit-modif, finding F8: "delegitimizing" reduces to lowering the probability of the legitimacy event.
