Statement
The epistemic position of predicting that a more skilled agent will win without predicting its moves is characterized by a theory of abstraction.

projects/deference/note-dump-2026-08-11/deference-trust-lab/AGENDA.md, Agency & Abstraction (the maintainer, May 2026): "My main idea here is to start with Vingean agency, by which I mean the sort of epistemic position we have when watching someone who is more skilled than us at chess: we cannot predict exactly what they will do, but we can predict that they will win. Can such a thing be characterized well by a theory of abstraction?"
Notes
A mid-level plan of Stage 5, an or over three candidate characterizations: the maintainer's 2023 Meaning & Agency account (optimization as Vingean agency, through endorsement), the deference lab's Blackwell-dominance sketch, and a candidate definition tested on a chess toy. A task reconciling the three is the given parent of the first and the last.
